The NFL Draft in Detroit is just one day away and the Dallas Cowboys are mentally preparing for their biggest draft battle in years.
America’s Team is set to be on the clock with the #24 pick of the NFL Draft but that situation could change.
Jerry Jones, due to cap space pressure, decided to let key starters leave the franchise and pursue new teams.
Therefore, the front office is prepared to supplement their roster with rookie starters.
Cowboys opt to recruit rookies to save cap space for key players
This will be a blessing for their cap space but could be a sacrifice for their performances in 2024.
Moreover, they must hit with most of their selections, as the Cowboys do not have the time to wait.
The 81-year-old owner emphasized the importance of the upcoming NFL Draft after claiming they had to ‘diminish’ their roster.
Fans would assume that the Cowboys need as many picks as possible over the three-day event in Michigan.
Dallas has forfeited a fourth-round pick because of the trade to acquire Trey Lanc in 2023.
However, they have received an extra seventh-round pick courtesy of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Jerry Jones is open to the idea of trading back for a surplus of picks
Jones was asked about the idea of trading back in the draft and sacrificing their first-round pick.
The Dallas Cowboys owner, responded: “It’s very likely to have an opportunity to do that… Obviously, we’d like to have some middle-round picks.”
There could be an opportunity to recoup more picks during the middle rounds of the NFL Draft with a trade.
Per Michael Gehlken, the players who remain on the board will determine that situation.
The players that remain on the board with determine the Cowboys’ decision
If America’s Team senses that multiple players they want are going to fall to the later rounds then it could be a perfect opportunity.
Nonetheless, this will be a delicate decision that will require the support of all key figures in the war room.
One thing we do know is that Jerry is a stickler for a bargain, so he would make sure that this trade would be beneficial for the Cowboys on Thursday.
If a player that the Cowboys desperately need falls to #24, it would be impossible to trade away.
